Our History

Our Penya's relationship with Nevada Smiths dates back to the UEFA Champions League final in Barcelona in 1999.

Jack, the owner of Nevada Smiths, was at the game, and promised that if Manchester United beat Bayern Munich, he would show Barça matches at his bar. When his wish was granted, Jack stuck to his word, which was a boon for the area's culés (Barça fans).
Soon, Barça fans began to gather at Nevada Smiths. Among the regulars were Blase Cunningham, Rebeca Miguel, Peter Grbic, Darko Majstorovic, Guillermo Nanni, Christina Velez, Victor Garriga, and Daniel Garriga.

Simultaneously, another group of culés, among whom were Marc Carreras, Joaquin Haro, Pol Fages and Jordi Esteve, founded the "Penya Blaugrana of New York" in 2001, but when some of its directors moved, it dwindled over time.

During the 2004-2005 season, and owing to Jordi Esteve's expertise in creating an officially recognized supporters club and Daniel Garriga's efforts in the growth of the Barça fanbase (which by now included David Samso, Daniel Rehn, Edward Robbins, Gonzalo, and Ernesto, among others), the Penya was reborn as “Penya Barcelonista New York City Nevada Smiths”, named after the bar that so generously hosts our group of culés for every Barça game. 2005 was also a special year because Frank Rijkaard's Barça squad, led by Puyol, Ronaldinho, Deco, and Eto'o won the Spanish league title in style.

On January 4, 2006, with help from our collaborators, we launched a blog to share our passion with culés around the world, and after more dedicated work in the following two months, we announced the creation of our Penya’s new homepage on March 5, 2006.

We are indebted to various media sources, including RAC-1, El Mundo Deportivo, Diario Sport, and Avui whose support over the last two years has been intrumental in making Bar Nevada Smiths the most famous sports bar among Barça fans outside of Spain. Thanks to expsoure on Tu Diràs and in El Mundo Deportivo and Diario Sport, we have had honor of visits from Lluis Bassat (Barça presidential candidate in 2003), Joan Boix (an FC Barcelona director in the club's social area), Alejandro Echevarria (a former FC Barcelona director), Cristina Vers (of the club's section which coordinates the activities of Barça supporters clubs worldwide), Dr. Xavier Sala i Martin (president of Barça's Economic Commission, a professor of Economics at Columbia University, and founder of Umbele) and in September 2007, of FC Barcelona president, Joan Laporta.

As we continue to grow at an unparalleled rate (240 members as of October 2007), we welcome you to share in our passion for the world’s biggest and noblest football club, FC Barcelona!

If you support Barça, live in the New York metropolitan area, and watch Barça games at Nevada Smiths, join our Penya today and bring the team that is close to your heart closer to where you live! For details, click here.
